About me
I have decided to look at the trailer for the film 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' which has a star cast including: Robert Patterson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. The director of this film is David Slade.
The film is from well known and award winning franchise; 'Twilight' which has created a massive fan base. I will use this to look into the best features of the film trailer and identify what attracts its audience:
The clip is very clever in the way it attracts its audience, throughout the franchise and the several films, the audience have grown an attraction to the characters within the film, particularily 'Robert Patterson'. The director uses this to his advantage by ensuring emotions from the characters are spread through to the audience.
When the key characters are in danger, and have tension moments, the audience feel the need to find out if their favourite character's are safe. This tension and danger works well with the location and the soundtarck used, as well as much of its CGI.
The film trailer is called 'From Paris With Love', which has a star cast including: John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Kasia Smutniak. The director of this film is Pierre Morel.
I have decided to look into how this thriller trailer keeps the audience on the edge and how they are made to keep guessing:
Firstly I can see that the clip uses a blockbuster type layout as there are many huge explosions and shootouts. This is mainly for action type films, however, I feel this can be incooporated into a thriller due add tension to the trailer.
Also I have noticed that the clip uses quick cuts which is a very effect way of bringing the audience into the clip. When this is applied to many film trailers, I could see that the audeince may question certain points in the clip. This is what brings them to the cinema as they want those questions answered.
Finally the fast paced non-diagetic soundtrack used adds tension to the clip, keeping a flow throughout the clip. Also, this music keeps the audience constantly on the edge; this ensures that they keep on guessing what may happen next. This would be an effective feature for my thriller type film trailer, due to the fact that the audience would constantly question what will happen next.
When I consider all the features I have mentioned from the film tariler; I can identify that there are several ways to which a film trailer can be made. A couple of these types of trailer's include:
Fast paced action - This trailer is the best example, audience assumption - A great example of this include 'Law Abiding Citizen, and finally on the edge tension - One of the best examples of this includes 'The Taking Of Pelham 123'.
The film is called "Law Abiding Citizen" and has a star cast including: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx and Bruce McGill. The director of the film is "F. Gary Gray".
After viewing the film trailer and the film itself, I have decided to look into how the film portrays the them of; Thriller with a Twist. This will give me inspiration to how I can apply my film trailer around this theme;
Throughout the film trailer, a sense of confusion is shown, this develops the theme of thriller with a twist. A s a result of this, questions will be created within the audience, due to this; tension an be seen within the film. This can be collaborated with the non-diagetic soundtrack, to keep the tension within the film.
After viewing the film itself, I can see how a sense of confusion is applied throughout the film by creating questions from the audience. Most of these are answered as soon as, however, several of the bigger questions are unanswered for most of the film, this keeps up the tension within the audience.
The way in which the director has ensured that the twist is one of the biggest features has been cleverly created by the director. He has ensured that the this is one of the biggest questions the audiences asks. As well as adding confusion to the film, it creates tension within the film and keeps the audience on track with the film.
The following film trailer is from the movie; Farewell.The cast stars a range of actors including: Alexandra Maria Lara, Dina Korzun, Emir Kusturica, Guillaume Canet, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Oleksii Gorbunov and Philippe Magnan. The director of the film is Christian Carion, and had a release date of September 23, 2009.
I have decided to look into very much the mise en scene of the film trailer to identify what effects they have on the audience and how this links with other features of the clip:
Firstly, the most clear feature of the clip is that a range of locations are used, this can be very effect when used correctly as the audience may question why this is happening. Also, many of these location used are very much secretive,or even background location, this is a key decison the director had to make in consideration with what the film was going to portray. This therefore adds tension to the clip, and linked with the music keeps the audince attracted to the clip. Due to these background locations adding tension to the clip, a sense of danger is applied and can mean that the audience question the portrayed theme.
Also, the importance of the film is based around some secret documents which are also kept a secret throughout the clip, adding to the tension. This can be collaborated with the lighting of the clip, dark locations apply the portrayed theme.
The film is called "Shinjuku Incident, and stars a cast including; Jackie Chan, Daniel Wu, Naoto Takenaka, Masaya, Jack Kao and Fan Bingbing. The director of the film is Tung-Shing Lee. The coporate company involved in the film is Sony Pictures. Release date is June 8, 2010.
I have again decided to concentrate on the sound specifically to identify how effectively it needs to be used within the film trailer;
As soon as the trailer begins a non-diagetic soundtrack and a voiceover are both used to add tension to the trailer. The will effect the audience massively as their attention will be caught right from the start of the trailer.This is an effect feature that can quite clearly be seen in multiple films to ensure the film trailer stands out.
Also, as the film trailer continues, the beat of the soundtrack is very much louder and jumps a lot more. This adds tension to the clip, in which the soundtrack collaborates with the genre of the film; the audince may therefore question many areas of the storyline.
Aswell as there being a beat that adds tension to the clip, sound effects are constantly used throughout. This increases the tension within the audince, aswell as ensuring they question the key moments of the clip.
Finally, a great effect used witnin the clip is at the very end; as the name of the film flashes onto the screen, a slice from sword sound effect will engage the audience to the clip.
Throughout many traiklers under the genre; Thriller, use a non-diagetic soundtrack more often than not. This is due to them being the biggest aspect of a thriller: it adds suspense, or even tension to a clip.
I have decided to look at several clips to identify how the soundtrack is used...
Below is the PP for the sound review on the trailer "Mind Machine":
I have looked at a feature trailer from the intensive thriller; Grimm Love which was released March 14th 2007. The cast of the film include: Keri Russel, Thomas Kretschmann and Thomas Huber. The director of the film was Martin Weiz.
The trailer below is from the movie "Grimm Love":
I have compared both clips to identify similar features within films under the thriller genre I have decided to create a film within.
When I consider both of the clip's which I have viewed so that I can compare them so I can spot any common features. When I viewed both I could see that the music, specifically non-diagetic is a key feature of both clips. I would need to apply these to my clips as it is what makes the clip a thriller, as it adds fear to the audience. Also, both clips develop a feature that brings the audience into the film. Both clips make their audience constantly question the film, this adds to the excitement of the film.
Although there are many common features, several features that are not seen in both can be identified; The second clip, the dioulouge of the characters is limited to the very end of the clip. This can be seen as very unconventional as the first clip, has the characters speaking consistently throughout. This adds tension to the clip, but also brings the audience into the clip as this would be one of the biggest questions on their lips; why is their no speech?
Throughout the lesson I have looked into several film trailer's from; http://www.traileraddict.com to identify and review different clips. The set of film trailers that stood out to me the most were for the film Unthinkable; Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Michael Sheen, also, Directed by Gregor Jordan.
The clip below is from the film "Unthinkable" with the clip name being 'You Know':
